I. Introduction

Law in the Maritimes has been written by a high school law teacher for his students to better understand the law. It has not been written or sanctioned by lawyers or legal experts. Therefore, it should be seen as a book designed to provide students and teachers with a basic understanding of the complexities of the Canadian legal system.

Law in the Maritimes is merely written to help you to become more "legal-wise" from a layman's point of view. In other words, it is hoped that after reading this book, the reader becomes for aware of legal pitfalls such as driving an unsafe car; hurting another person; leaving a backyard swimming pool full of water, unfenced and unattended; taking the property of another; owning a vicious dog; going into someone's vacant house; stealing from one's employer; etc.

Law in the Maritimes is to be seen as a guide, or an introduction our legal system. It is intended to allow the reader to better understand the types of criminal and civil difficulties one may encounter in their lives. Further, it allows the reader to better understand the steps involved in our legal process in facing criminal and civil difficulties. Finally, it gives the reader an overview of the defences one may use to justify ones actions

On a final note, every effort has been made to achieve accuracy. But, no doubt there may be the occasional unintentional error. As well, all of the examples and/or case studies are fictional, unless otherwise stated. Therefore, any resemblance to a legal case involving any person, either living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Please bear in mind that Law in the Maritimes is not to be seen as a replacement for a lawyer. It is merely a Canadian high school textbook of very simplistic design. Please remember that if you are facing a complicated legal issue, always consult with a lawyer. I hope you will find Law in the Maritimes interesting and informative.

This first part of the resource ... "The Introduction" is a discussion document outlining where our law comes from. What is law? Can it be defined? Why do we have laws? Why should we study law? This resource document serves as a companion to our classroom discussions.
